How to Convert Fresh Food from Oven to Air Fryer

For fresh food, Jenny Tschiesche’s simple Air Frying 101 method is to subtract 20°C from the typical oven temperature and reduce the cooking time by around 20–25%.

For example, if an oven recipe says to cook at 180°C for 25 minutes, try setting your air fryer to 160°C for around 20 minutes.

This works well for many fresh foods, including vegetables, chicken, fish, potatoes and homemade snacks. For best results, check the food a few minutes before the end of cooking, especially the first time you try converting a recipe.

How to Convert Frozen Food from Oven to Air Fryer

For many frozen foods, Jenny recommends keeping the suggested oven temperature the same but reducing the cooking time by around 50%.

For example, if the oven instructions say to cook at 180°C for 20 minutes, try setting your air fryer to 180°C for around 10 minutes.

Frozen food often cooks faster in an air fryer because hot air circulates quickly around the food. Shake the basket or turn food halfway through cooking where needed, especially for items such as chips, nuggets, fish fingers and breaded foods.

Fan Oven to Air Fryer Conversion

If your recipe is written for a fan oven, you can still use the same simple starting point: reduce the temperature by around 20°C and reduce the cooking time by around 20–25%.

For example, a fan oven recipe that cooks at 200°C for 30 minutes could be tested in the air fryer at 180°C for 22–24 minutes.

If the food is browning too quickly, lower the temperature slightly. If it needs more colour or crispness, add a few extra minutes at the end.

Air Fryer Cooking Tips

Converting oven recipes is simple once you know the basic rule, but these extra tips will help you get better results:

  • Do not overcrowd the basket. Air needs to circulate around the food for even cooking.
  • Shake or turn food halfway through. This is especially useful for chips, vegetables, breaded foods and frozen items.
  • Add a little moisture where needed. If food is not breaded or coated, a small amount of oil, lemon juice, marinade or sauce can help stop it drying out.
  • Check early the first time. Air fryers vary, so check food a few minutes before the converted cooking time ends.
  • Use a food thermometer for meat and poultry. Check the thickest part to make sure it is cooked through.

Best Foods to Try When Converting Oven Recipes

Air fryer conversion works especially well for everyday oven favourites such as:

  • chips and potato wedges
  • roast potatoes
  • sausages
  • chicken breasts, thighs and wings
  • fish fillets and fish fingers
  • vegetables
  • garlic bread
  • pastry snacks
  • frozen party food

Air Fryer Conversion FAQs

Yes. Most oven recipes can be adapted for an air fryer by reducing the temperature and cooking time. For fresh food, reduce the temperature by around 20°C and reduce the cooking time by 20–25%.

Usually, yes. Air fryers are smaller than ovens and circulate hot air quickly, so many foods cook faster and become crisp without needing as much oil.

Some foods benefit from preheating, especially if you want a crisp finish. However, many everyday foods can be cooked without a long preheat. Check your air fryer instructions for model-specific guidance.

For many frozen foods, you can keep the oven temperature roughly the same and reduce the cooking time by around half. Always check the food is piping hot and cooked through before serving.

Food can dry out if it is cooked for too long, cooked at too high a temperature, or has very little moisture. Try reducing the cooking time, lowering the temperature slightly, or adding a little oil, marinade, lemon juice or sauce.
